Paul and Carol are two of our Spain Experts and have spent part of each year in their house between Javea and Denia for more than 20 years. They put together their guide book based on extensive local research and experience and it is a real “hands-on” approach rather than the normal tourist speak. They have traveled extensively around the area and have lots of friends who are based there and nearby so they know all the best restaurants and bars that the locals people love (and the locals refuse to pay tourist prices!)

Paul’s intro

This is how Paul puts it in his introduction to the guide…

Ola

We have been coming to this area of Spain for over twenty two years and have had a house there for most of that time. We have seen the area grow from a small resort to a very well known holiday centre. One thing that has not changed is the spectacular sight of the Orange blossom, the fragrance of Jasmine and the striking colours of Bougainvillea climbing plants.

Listed in our guide are just a few of the sights and tastes of Spain. One thing to keep in mind at all times, only Mass and Bullfights start on time, and even then the Bullfights sometimes start late! The locals sometimes speak Valenciana which sounds like Portuguese and confuses the hell out of me! English being my second language after gibberish!

We hope you like our suggestions. In the area it is said there are over 370 restaurants – one for every day of the year and some!!. Most of the restaurants mentioned have dining both inside and out, and are open all year round, although it’s worth checking at Xmas and in high season. Please note that most Spanish dress for dinner, not over the top, just smart casual, they also eat dinner late, 11.30 pm not being an unusual time to start….complete with all the kids!

As the owners of the restaurants change all the time its better to check before you dive in. The big storms of September/October 2007 (622 ltr of water per sq metre!) washed out a lot of local roads and restaurants. So beware!

Paul has lived in Javea at all times of year as this dramatic shot he took of Arenal beach in winter shows.

The winter can be an excellent time to visit as the temperatures are often comfortable and there are far fewer tourists, but some of the restaurants and bars may close until the summer season
